While we are big proponents of using alternative transportation modes for commuting, we obviously encourage going car-free or “car-lite” for other trips too! For the most part, all of us here at ATP practice what we preach and usually get around by walking, biking, or taking transit – and for me, this past weekend was no exception.

Here at ATP, we are all about making people aware of the various transportation options available in the area and encouraging residents and workers to try different modes of commuting besides driving alone. However, there are a few commuters in the area and elsewhere that have chosen some rather unique forms of transportation to get to work. Some of these we would only recommend for the highly skilled, but if your commute lets you skip sitting in traffic, saves you some money, and helps you get exercise during the day, then you have our full support!

Join us at 9am this Thursday as Arlington County Board Chair Walter Tejada officially opens the station at Walter Reed Community Center – the first of over 30 new stations in the county that will be installed in the coming months! Members of the public are welcome to attend as we celebrate the expansion of an affordable, simple, and convenient mode of transportation for county residents, workers, and visitors.

A new study shows that car commuters gain more weight than non-car commuters, even with additional exercise! This Spring, change up your commuting routine and incorporate biking and walking into your daily trips. With plenty of events coming up over the next couple months, it's a great time to get together with coworkers or neighbors and start working towards your health goals!

Last week, one of ATP’s Business Development Managers, Elizabeth Floyd, attended the National Women’s Bicycling Forum in DC, which preceded the League of American Bicyclists’ National Bike Summit. This daylong forum featured numerous speakers in a variety of sessions that discussed topics such as how to inspire more women to bike, encouraging bike shops to cater more towards women, and the physical infrastructure and safety issues that encourage or discourage female cyclists. Last week's "snow day" was another great reminder to make sure that we all are prepared in case of a weather event or other emergency situation. Here at ATP, we are big proponents of having a commute back up plan, just in case your normal mode of transportation is suddenly unavailable. Knowing all of your available transportation options is an important step in ensuring that you will be calm, confident, and prepared in case of an emergency!

As today marks the first day of Telework Week, you may have noticed that teleworking has been quite a hot topic in the news recently. Since Yahoo's recent decision to ban telework, there has been a significant response to the new policy, as discussions about issues such as working parents, work productivity, and employee trust have been raised. While Yahoo has its reasons for requiring workers to come into the office, there's no denying the benefits that a telework policy can have on a company and its employees.
