Gear Up for Bike to Work Day

Did you know that May is National Bike Month? There are many ways to celebrate, but you’re not going to want to miss out on the month’s largest event: Bike to Work Day (BTWD). Occurring on Friday, May 17, 2024, this annual event encourages commuters to ditch their cars and instead hop on a bike to get to work. Every year, communities around the country come together to celebrate BTWD and Arlington is no exception.

Arlington will be hosting six BTWD pit stop locations throughout the county on the morning of the event and one in the early evening. When registering for the event, you can view the full list which includes pit stops in Virginia, Maryland, and Washington, D.C. Sign up for your most convenient pit stop and you can get your free Bike to Work Day t-shirt there on BTWD!

Why Participate?

Bike to Work day is not just about getting from your home to work – it’s a community-wide event that brings commuters together to celebrate a healthier, more sustainable commute option and lifestyle. Long-time cyclists and first-time participants alike will be joining together at the various pit stops for a morning (or afternoon) of fun, community engagement, and giveaways!

Energize Your Morning

One of the key benefits of participating in BTWD is the positive impact that it can have on both your physical and mental health. Biking to work is a natural way to incorporate exercise into your daily routine and you’ll feel uplifted after engaging with participants and vendors at your pit stop. In addition to giveaways, healthy snacks and water will provided at pit stops for a quick recharge before continuing on to your final destination.

An Eco-Friendly Alternative

By choosing to bike, you can reduce your carbon footprint and contribute towards a more sustainable community and future – not to mention, biking is a cost-effective form of commuting that can save you money on other parking and commuting costs.

No Bike? No Problem!

Even if you don’t own a bicycle, Capital Bikeshare (CaBi) has got you covered. CaBi has a wide array of stations located within Arlington and the surrounding Metro DC region. Simply download the mobile app or check the website out to find your nearest station. From that point, you can use your mobile app to unlock the bike and ride it to your preferred pit stop.

Whether you’re a long-time cyclist or a first-time bike commuter, BTWD is sure to be a fulfilling event for everyone. Who knows? Maybe you will discover your new favorite commute method while making a positive impact on your community at the same time. The League of American Bicyclists has announced it has inducted Arlington’s very own, Nestlé USA, into it’s ranks as a Bronze-level Bicycle Friendly Business (BFB). Arlington Transportation Partners (ATP) is excited to celebrate Nestlé’s esteemed accomplishment in joining over 1,400 pragmatic businesses throughout the US who boast Bicycle Friendly designations.

In 2023, 21 employers and buildings in Arlington County achieved the highest Champions designation, Platinum. To reach Platinum, a Champion must go above and beyond in offering amenities and programs that promote sustainable commuting and transportation. Arlington employers, property managers, and special guests flocked to The Westin in Crystal City for the annual Champions Banquet. This event serves two purposes: the first is to honor and recognize the hard work of all employers, residential properties, and commercial properties who attained Champion status in 2023 – 160 in total! The second is to kick off a new year of Champions and to make a continued commitment towards transportation solutions and commuter benefits.
