The Crystal City Business Improvement District (BID) is a public-private partnership established in April 2006 to promote the vibrant Crystal City business, retail, restaurant and residential community. The BID is committed to showcasing the area as a world-class destination for visitors, employees and residents. Crystal City is INNOVATIVE, ACTIVE, ARTFUL, ACCESSIBLE, and GREEN. Not only does the BID promote green transportation options for residents, visitors and businesses, it offers its own employees a transit subsidy, Capital Bikeshare corporate memberships, telework options, and flex scheduling, as well as providing bike facilities. George Mason University, Arlington Campus

George Mason University, established as a branch of the University of Virginia in 1957, gained independent university status in 1972 by an act of the Virginia General Assembly.

By developing the concept of the distributed university, Mason created an integrated network of campuses in Fairfax, Arlington, and Prince William counties, each with a distinctive academic focus that plays a critical role in its region. The Arlington Campus programs emphasize law, policy, economics, conflict resolution, social work, nonprofit management, initiatives in educational transformation, and global studies.

Smithsonian Institution, Office of Contracting and Personal Property Management

The Smithsonian OCon & PPM office supports Washington DC’s Smithsonian Institution museum system. Employees are offered a range of benefits, including flex-time scheduling, compressed work weeks, telework, shuttles as well as Metro fare between work sites, ATP presentations for employees, walking and biking promotion, and a pre-tax transportation benefit.

Temple Army Readiness Center

The transportation staff at Temple Army Readiness Center are very motivated to find commute alternatives for their service members due to the limited parking capacity of their parking garage. The facility conducted a transportation survey of its staff to better inform the transportation decision making process later on. Also, the National Guard is exploring ways to partner with the Department of State’s Foreign Service Institute since they are in the same location and both generate large amounts of vehicle traffic. This collaboration to achieve local traffic relief is the hallmark of a true Champion!

Air Force Aid Society

The Air Force Aid Society (AFAS) supports Airmen and enhances the Air Force mission by providing emergency financial assistance, educational support, and community programs. AFAS is also committed to providing the best experience for employees. To this end, they provide a monthly subsidy for commuting by transit, $500 annual fitness center reimbursement as well as on-site shower facilities, and a formal telework program with over 80% employee participation. With 42% of staff choosing a mode other than driving alone to work, they are an example of what makes Arlington County a great place to work.

Air Force Association

The Air Force Association joined Champions at Bronze Level and set out some ambitious goals in order to increase its Champions standing. The organization hires a lot of employees straight out of college and recognizes the need to offer robust employee benefits in order to increase employee satisfaction and retention. With this in mind, AFA has begun the process of implementing a pre-tax transit benefit through SmartBenefits as well as exploring a Capital Bikeshare corporate account. They already offer flex scheduling and telework for many of their positions but are in a period of benefits evaluation and hope to expand their current offerings.

American Association of Motor Vehicle Administrators

AAMVA represents the state and provincial officials in the United States and Canada who administer and enforce motor vehicle laws and highway safety. AAMVA is a nonprofit organization developing model programs in motor vehicle administration, law enforcement and highway safety. The association also serves as an information clearinghouse in these areas, and acts as the international spokesman for these interests. AAMVA offers a combination of a pre-tax benefit and direct subsidy for employees to use on transit for their commute. In addition, the office has bike racks, showers, and is conveniently located two blocks from Ballston Metro.

Arlington Economic Development

Arlington Economic Development (AED) provides visionary leadership and superior services to Arlington’s business community, its tourism industry and its real estate development. Located a couple of blocks from the Ballston Metro Station, AED employees receive a variety of commuting benefits such as a direct transit benefit for those who choose to ride metrorail or bus to work, flex time and staggered work schedule and with the option to telework too!

Cadmus

Cadmus is a true Champion and offers a ton in the ways of transportation benefits. They have essential bike commuter amenities like showers and locker rooms and even offer their regular bike commuters a $100/year stipend for maintenance and repair on their bikes. Cadmus has many of the bronze and silver tier Champions requirements checked off so they are now looking to solidify their gold requirements. Given their bike amenities and transit benefit, the company is pursuing Bicycle Friendly Business and Best Workplaces for Commuters designations.

GDIT has been dedicated to solving complex mission and efficiency challenges for the U.S. government. GDIT provides employees with $100 through their commuter benefits program and also offers the $20 bicycle benefit to those who commute to work by bike. GHT is a leader in creating sustainable engineering solutions for base buildings and tenant spaces. Located a couple of blocks from the Ballston Metro Station, GHT offers a variety of transit benefits to its employees such as a pre-tax transit subsidy and a formal telework option. For those who chose to bike, GHT Limited’s location is perfect as it is located right off the Custis Trail and the building provides shower access. The company believes in providing a work-life balance for its employees and offers a compressed scheduled; most employees work a 10 X 4 schedule.

John Snow Inc

John Snow, Inc. (JSI) is a large employer committed to transportation options and wellness programming for employees. The company offers discounted Capital Bikeshare memberships to employees and is a bronze level Bicycle Friendly Business. Between their telework program and subsidized transit benefit, JSI is poised to climb all the way to the platinum Champions level once they complete one additional gold level item. The HR staff at JSI is working closely with ATP to identify the best option for completing the gold level Champions requirements and is strongly considering applying for the Best Workplaces for Commuters award!

Located across from the Clarendon Metro Station, Keppler Speakers offers a variety of transit benefits to its employees such as a pre-tax transit benefits, formal telework policy, flexible work schedule and more! Marymount University

Marymount University is a comprehensive, coeducational Catholic located in Arlington, Virginia. Marymount offers bachelors, masters, and doctoral degrees in a wide range of disciplines and has a diverse and welcoming academic community. Marymount University offers a wide range of transportation benefits to their employees and students including a shuttle bus from Ballston Metro to the main campus, pre-tax transportation benefits (to staff), bicycle infrastructure and support, and more.

MTB Early Enrichment Center

MTB is a Spanish-immersion early enrichment center with a “healthy mind, healthy body” philosophy and a curriculum that prepares the children for kindergarten. Various enrichment programs as well as more traditional hands-on learning are offered, such as art appreciation, music lessons, gardening, and age-appropriate cooking lessons; homemade nutritious meals using fresh ingredients including organic vegetables from the garden are served. Since arriving, and with the help of Arlington Transportation Partners, they have developed a commuter benefits program that encourages the use of public transit, biking, and walking. As their employee population grows they are looking to implement carpool, vanpool, and other ridesharing options to ensure employees have every option available to get to work.

Offender Aid and Restoration

Offender Aid and Restoration (OAR) is an organization devoted to helping those who have been imprisoned to gain and maintain employment. Located in Courthouse, the organization believes in a work-life balance and offers a pre-tax transit benefit, has an informal telework policy and provides flexible schedule to allow employees a better work/life balance.

Phoenix Bikes

Phoenix Bikes is a non-profit that seeks to educate youth through bicycling, bicycle maintenance and teamwork exercises. The Youth Education Program looks to provide 12-17-year-olds with the skills needed to maintain and fix bikes. They also serve as a community bike shop, selling refurbished bikes and offering repair services. Being a bike related organization already ranks them high on the Champions radar, but that doesn’t stop them from offering great benefits like nearby showers/changing facilities and a telework program.

Public Broadcasting Service

PBS and its member stations are America’s largest classroom, the nation’s largest stage for the arts and a trusted window to the world. In addition, PBS’s educational media helps prepare children for success in school and opens up the world to them in an age-appropriate way. PBS offers Capital Bikeshare corporate memberships, promotes biking and walking year around and engages employees in numerous other wellness programs.

The Nature Conservancy

The Nature Conservancy is the leading conservation organization working around the world to protect ecologically important lands and waters for nature and people. The Nature Conservancy has more than 1 million members and work in all 50 United States and more than 30 countries around the world – protecting habitats from grasslands to coral reefs, from Australia to Alaska to Zambia. Air Conditioning, Heating, and Refrigeration Institute

The Air Conditioning, Heating, and Refrigeration Institute (AHRI) is the trade association representing manufacturers of HVACR and water heating equipment within the global industry. AHRI is very active in promoting wellness and exercise among their employees – they currently provide free annual Capital Bikeshare memberships to staff and also participate in events including Walk at Lunch Day and Bike to Work Day. AHRI also provides a pre-tax transit benefit for employees to use on their commute by bus or Metro.

The Ballston BID is a 25 block neighborhood of commercial and residential properties. With over 8.3 million square feet of office space, 1 million square feet of retail space and 8,000 residential units, Ballston offers a range of market-rate options. To support this, Ballston offers its residents, visitors and tenants a wide variety of transit options such as Ballston Metro Station (serviced by Orange and Silver Lines), Capital Bikeshare stations, dedicated bike lanes and a bus hub, which is home to several ART and Metro bus stops.

The Ballston BID is committed to engaging the employers in the neighborhood by partnering with ATP on National Walking Day, Bike to Work Day and other Champions events.

EagleBank

EagleBank was founded on the realization that banks were largely failing their communities because they were simply not part of them. With the desire to change that they started a new standard for banking and have become the go-to-community bank in Maryland, Virginia and Washington, DC. Located a block from the Ballston Metro Station, EagleBank offers its customers a variety of services that include online and mobile banking, commercial loans & lines of credit and treasury management.

Hanover Research

Hanover Research is a global information services firm providing knowledge support to both for-profit and non-profit organizations. Through their unique, fixed-fee model they deliver customized, timely, and authoritative research and advice enabling their clients to make informed decisions, identify and seize opportunities, and heighten their effectiveness. The company offers robust benefits to employees that include a pre-tax transit subsidy, a formal telework policy and subsidized gym membership to Golds and Washington Sports Club.

HDR

HDR is an architectural, engineering and consulting firm. HDR recently located in Clarendon and offers their employees robust transportation benefits that includes a combination of a direct and pre-tax transit subsidy, flexible work hours and an informal telework policy. In their effort to make commuting easy for their employees, HDR has installed a transit screen to share information about the available transit option in real-time.

Healthcare Distribution Alliance

HDA is the national association representing primary healthcare distributors, the vital link between the nation’s pharmaceutical manufacturers and healthcare providers. HDA and its members work daily to provide value and achieve cost savings, an estimated $42 billion each year to our nation’s healthcare system. Over a third of HDA’s employees participate in the transit benefit subsidy of up to $105 a month provided by the organization, while several employees in the office bike to work and take advantage of the shower facilities provided.

National Association of Chain Drug Stores

The National Association of Chain Drug Stores is a relatively recent addition to the Arlington business community and chose its current office in Rosslyn largely due to its proximity to both the Rosslyn and Courthouse Metro stations. While in Alexandria, NACDS offered free parking to employees but they have switched to paying $75/month toward employees’ parking costs and $130/month toward employees’ SmartBenefits transit accounts. NACDS is a role model for how to begin to shift company culture away from drive-alone commuting and toward a holistic view that considers all modes of commuting. In addition to its stellar transit benefit, the company also offers an informal telework policy, flex time scheduling, and invaluable bike amenities like secure storage, lockers, and showers.

Navy Federal Credit Union

Navy Federal Credit Union is an armed forces bank serving the Navy, Army, Marine Corps, Air Force, Coast Guard, DOD and their families. Located in transit friendly Ballston, the bank offers a direct transit subsidy to employees who commute to work using public transit.

Professional Services Council

The Professional Services Council (PSC) is the national trade association of the government professional and technical services industry. Solely focused on preserving, improving, and expanding the federal government market for its members, PSC is the most respected industry voice and leader on legislative and regulatory policy issues related to government procurement, outsourcing and related business policy. The organization offers a direct transit subsidy to employees for their commute and has an informal telework policy as well as flex time. PSC is also active in promoting health and wellness and has participated in National Walk at Lunch Day.

Ramboll

Ramboll Enivron is the premier global consultancy, working with clients to manage their most challenging environmental, health and safety issues and attain their sustainability goals. Ramboll Enivron provides a pre-tax transit benefit to employees, showers and bike racks for their bike commuters, promotes health and wellness through their participation in Walk at Lunch Day and shares information about alternative transportation options in the office.

Rosslyn BID

Rosslyn, the urban community that is a gateway from Northern Virginia to Washington DC, is growing by leaps and bounds. The residential population of 11,000 continues to expand as people move into some of Rosslyn’s newer, more modern residences. At the same time, major commercial developments promise an even larger worker population in the neighborhood. Good public transportation systems will continue to play a critical role in ensuring that the community’s growth does not result in gridlock. In addition, the convenience and flexibility of having multiple transportation options has been a key factor in attracting employers, residents, and visitors to Rosslyn. The Rosslyn BID oversees much of the activity in the neighborhood and recognizes the value in programs like Capital Bikeshare corporate membership and SmartBenefits, which are promoted by Champions.

The American Waterways Operators

The American Waterways Operators is the national advocate for the U.S. tugboat, towboat and barge industry, which serves the nation as the safest, most environmentally friendly, and most economical mode of freight transportation. AWO promotes the long term economic soundness of the industry and works to enhance its ability to provide safe, efficient, and environmentally responsible transportation.

Despite having a small office of only around 20 employees, AWO has shown a commitment to providing the benefits and resources to improve their employees’ commutes. The organization provides direct transit subsidy of up to $130 a month, which half of the staff takes advantage of. There are also showers and bike racks available to use for bike commuters, and the office often participates in events such as Walk at Lunch Day to promote health and wellness among employees.

The Common Application

The Common Application is a not-for-profit membership organization committed to providing reliable services that promote equity, access and integrity in the college application process. The employees at The Common Application enjoy a variety of transportation benefits such as a pretax transit benefit, flexible time/staggered work schedule, informal telework and more.

The Convention Store

The Convention Store (TCS) provides transportation system design and management for conventions, trade shows, sporting events, airports, parking facilities, and special events. The company thoroughly understands the needs of its clients and tailors the management team and staff to meet those needs. No matter how small or large an event is, TCS is the one-stop-shop for transportation needs. TCS was a slam dunk for the Champions program given its thorough understanding of the local transportation systems. TCS offers a subsidized transit benefit, carsharing memberships, and SmarTrip cards to employees and has a flex time and telework policies in place. Upon joining the Champions program, ATP helped the company apply and earn the Best Workplaces for Commuters designation!

Virginia Department of Corrections

The Virginia Department of Corrections is a model correctional agency and a proven innovative leader in the profession. Their mission is to enhance public safety by controlling and supervising sentenced offenders in a humane, cost-efficient manner, consistent with sound correctional principles and constitutional standards. Virginia is a safer place to live and work because the Department provides exemplary services and programs for the rehabilitation and supervision of offenders.

Virginia Tech Research Center

The Virginia Tech Research Center – Arlington, at 900 N. Glebe Road, is a highly visible state-of-the-art facility designed to further the university’s mission to expand its research portfolio in the National Capital Region. The region offers great opportunity for partnerships with corporate research entities and close proximity to government agencies and other public and private-sector organizations. The building is located in the vibrant Ballston district of Arlington, a short distance from many of the leading science and research agencies of the federal government and many high-technology companies.

BAE Systems, Rosslyn

As a major manufacturer, BAE System’s operations have a significant impact on the environment through the energy and resources we use and the waste we generate. BAE is working to reduce the environmental impact of our operations and helping our customers and suppliers do the same.

Doorways for Women and Families

Doorways for Women and Families creates pathways out of domestic violence and homelessness leading to safe and stable lives. Doorways for Women and Families offer a monetary incentive for not driving (parking) to staff and provide information about alternative transportation options in their office.

Eastern Research Group, Inc.

ERG is a multi-disciplinary consulting company with offices in Arlington, Virginia, and 10 other cities across the country. ERG helps its clients preserve the environment, improve worker protection, ensure the safety of food and drugs, plan sustainable facilities, and achieve other positive outcomes.

ERG currently provides a transit subsidy to employees, and over two-thirds of the staff is permitted to telework, especially with the recently upgraded technology for the office. In addition, ERG is located in the Navy League Building in Courthouse, which has a gym with showers and locker facilities, as well as secure bike parking for bike commuters. Finally, ERG recently began offering discounted carshare memberships with Zipcar to provide another way for employees to get around during and after the workday.

2019 Employer Criteria


After completing BRONZE, SILVER, and GOLD Levels, complete three additional actions:

  • Complete four additional GOLD or SILVER Level items (at least two must be GOLD Level)
  • Offer a direct or combination transportation benefit
  • Utilize Modeify to identify commuting opportunities at your worksite
  • Implement a new program or benefit, based on transportation survey
  • Complete a comprehensive, research-based case study
  • Form a new vanpool or add three riders to existing vanpools via Vanpool Connect
  • Provide or subsidize shuttle service, current transit route, or Capital Bikeshare station
  • Provide a financial incentive for biking and/or walking
  • Achieve or maintain a Bicycle Friendly Business designation
  • Refer a new employer to Champions and receive credit after their enrollment meeting
  • Sponsor an ATP event
  • Install transportation display and/or real-time digital screen

Champions 2019 activities must be completed by November 29, 2019.

After completing BRONZE and SILVER Levels, complete three actions:
*Site plan properties must be in compliance with County requirements to achieve Gold Level or higher.

  • Conduct an employee commute and benefits survey, discuss recommendations
  • Offer up to $265/month pre-tax transportation benefit
  • Create or maintain a formalized telework program
  • Host vanpool formation meetings
  • Provide lockers and showers in office suite or subsidize gym memberships for active commuters
  • Offer a year-round 4/10 or 9/80 compressed work schedule
  • Provide annual Capital Bikeshare corporate memberships
  • Have ATP host a training for managers at your worksite
  • Invite a colleague from another Arlington County business to an ATP educational event
  • Achieve a Commuter Connections Employer Recognition Award
  • Additional unique program as determined by ATP representative

After completing BRONZE Level, complete three actions:

  • Pilot a telework program
  • Offer equitable benefits for parking and transit
  • Achieve a Best Workplaces for Commuters designation
  • Offer a seasonal compressed work schedule or early release
  • Allow commuters free access to showers and lockers
  • Set up a carsharing (Zipcar, car2go, etc.) discount for employees
  • Set up a Lyft or Uber business account
  • Adopt an ART bus stop
  • Share Champions logo and sustainable transportation initiatives on company website
  • Provide free SmarTrip cards for new employees
  • Invite ATP to a wellness or benefits fair
  • Have ATP host an employee event at your worksite
  • Participate in/promote at least one of the following events
    • National Walking Day (April)
    • Bike to Work Day (May)
    • Our Shared Street Pop-Up (August)
    • Car Free Day (September)
  • Participate in at least one ATP program
    • Commute map
    • Feedback survey
    • Focus group

Complete these actions:

  • Host an enrollment and a follow-up Champions meeting
  • Distribute employee transportation packets
  • Promote at least two transportation options or programs to employees
    • BikeArlington/WalkArlington
    • Capital Bikeshare
    • Carsharing/Ridesharing
    • Public transportation
    • Vanpool Connect
    • Telework!VA

Champions will receive the following Level specific rewards for their level of participation in 2019. Champions 2019 activities must be completed by November 29, 2019.

Bronze Level

  • Invitation to our annual Champions banquet
  • Featured Champion on ArlingtonTransportationPartners.com
  • Access to Champions toolkit (logos, press releases, case studies)
  • Receive framed Champions award certificate and decal
  • Invitation to ATP networking events
  • Social media support on Twitter and Facebook

Silver Level

  • All BRONZE Level rewards
  • Recognition in WTOP publication
  • Recognition from local Business Improvement District
  • Recognition in Arlington Chamber of Commerce’s Arlingtonian newsletter

Gold Level

  • All BRONZE and SILVER Level rewards
  • Recognition in an Arlington Economic Development Publication
  • Opportunity to be featured as Champion of the Month on ArlingtonTransportationPartners.com
  • Recognition in Washington Business Journal
  • Recognition on LinkedIn

Platinum Level

  • All BRONZE, SILVER, and GOLD Level rewards
